If you hold a UK Private Pilot Licence (PPL), you must meet the 90-day rule before flying with passengers. Learn what it means, how to stay current, and how Hour Building can help.

What Is the 90 Day Rule for UK PPL Pilots?
To carry passengers on a UK PPL, you must comply with the 90-day currency rule, as stated in FCL.060(b)(2) under the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).You may only carry passengers if, within the preceding 90 days, you have performed:- 3 take-offs- 3 landings- As the sole manipulator of the controls- In an aircraft of the same class or type
Flying at Night? There’s One More Step
If you want to fly with passengers at night, you must also complete at least one take-off and landing at night within the same 90-day window, unless you hold a valid Instrument Rating (FCL.060(b)(3)).
Why the Rule Exists
Skill maintenance – Your abilities decline over time without flying regularly.- Passenger safety – You’re responsible for their lives. Stay sharp.- Legal compliance – The rule is part of the UK Aircrew Regulations. Flying out of currency? You’re not allowed to carry passengers until you’ve regained it — no exceptions.
Regaining Passenger Currency
If you’re out of currency, simply:
1. Book a flight solo or with an instructor.
2. Complete 3 take-offs and landings.
3. Log them correctly (you must be sole manipulator of the controls).
Hour Building Tip: Regain currency in one short flying session using our pay-as-you-go aircraft hire.
Common Mistakes UK PPL Holders Make
Flying with passengers after time off without checking your logbook.- Logging dual instruction as currency without being the sole manipulator.- Flying at night without proper night recency.
