REVALIDATION
(Single Engine Piston)
SEP Revalidation for UK CAA & EASA Pilots

Complete Your SEP Revalidation in Spain
with a Qualified UK CAA & EASA CRI

At Hour-Building.com, we offer SEP (Single Engine Piston) revalidations for both UK CAA and EASA licence holders using a qualified Class Rating Instructor (CRI) holding both UK CAA and EASA instructional privileges.
Many pilots combine their flying holiday or hour-building trip with their SEP revalidation, allowing them to remain current whilst gaining valuable Pilot-in-Command experience across Spain and Europe.
Whether you fly G-registered aircraft on a UK licence, EASA aircraft on an EASA licence, or maintain both licences, we can help you complete your SEP revalidation requirements efficiently and professionally.
One of the most popular services we provide is helping pilots align their UK CAA and EASA SEP expiry dates so that future revalidations can be completed together during a single visit.

What Is SEP Revalidation?
The SEP (Single Engine Piston) Class Rating allows pilots to fly most light single-engine aeroplanes and remains valid for
24 months.

To continue exercising the privileges of the rating, pilots must either:

-
Revalidate the rating before expiry by experience
-
Renew the rating after expiry through additional training and a proficiency check
-
Most active pilots choose revalidation by experience as it is the simplest and most cost-effective route.

SEP Revalidation by Experience Requirements
To revalidate an SEP Class Rating by experience, the following requirements must be completed during the final 12 months before the rating expires:

-
12 hours total flight time in SEP aircraft
-
At least 6 hours as Pilot in Command (PIC)
-
12 take-offs
-
12 landings
-
A minimum of 1 hour flight training with a Flight Instructor (FI) or Class Rating Instructor (CRI)

The instructional flight is not a test.
It is designed to refresh skills, review procedures and ensure continued safe operation of the aircraft.
The flight can be tailored to the pilot's experience and may include navigation, airspace procedures, emergencies, aircraft handling or any other areas the pilot wishes to review.

When Can I Complete My SEP Revalidation?
A common misconception is that pilots must wait until just before the expiry date.
In reality, the required experience and instructional flight can be completed at any time within the final 12 months of the rating validity period.
For example:
If your SEP rating expires on 31 July 2027, the revalidation experience can be accumulated from 1 August 2026 onwards.
This allows plenty of flexibility to combine revalidation with hour building or a flying holiday.
Importantly, completing the revalidation within the final 90 days before expiry allows the new rating to run from the existing expiry date, ensuring no validity is lost.

Align Your UK CAA and EASA SEP Expiry Dates
Many pilots now hold both UK CAA and EASA licences but often find themselves managing two separate SEP expiry dates.
This frequently results in additional instructor flights, additional travel and unnecessary administration every time one of the ratings approaches expiry.
Because the Hour-Building.com CRI holds both UK CAA and EASA instructional privileges, many pilots choose to align their UK CAA and EASA SEP revalidations so that both ratings share the same expiry date.
Once aligned, future revalidations become significantly simpler.
Instead of arranging separate trips and separate instructor flights for each authority, both ratings can be revalidated during the same visit, with a single instructional flight programme and a single period of hour building.
Benefits include:
-
One revalidation trip instead of two
-
Reduced travel costs
-
Reduced aircraft hire costs
-
Less administration
-
Easier licence management
-
One expiry date to remember
-
One future revalidation visit every two years
-
One instructor for both authorities
-
Opportunity to combine both revalidations with hour building
Many pilots combine this process with an hour-building trip, allowing them to maintain both licences whilst continuing to gain valuable Pilot-in-Command experience.
If you currently hold both a UK CAA and EASA licence with different SEP expiry dates, we can help you develop the most efficient strategy for bringing both ratings into alignment.

Can a CRI Conduct the SEP Revalidation Flight?
Yes.
A qualified Class Rating Instructor (CRI) may conduct the mandatory instructional flight required for SEP revalidation by experience.
The CRI can tailor the flight to your level of experience and your future flying plans.
For many experienced pilots, a CRI provides the ideal balance between regulatory compliance and practical operational experience.

What Happens If My SEP Rating Has Expired?
If the SEP rating expires, revalidation by experience is no longer available.
The rating must instead be renewed.
Renewal normally involves:
-
Assessment of previous experience
-
Refresher training
-
Proficiency check with an examiner
The longer a rating has been expired, the more refresher training may be required before a proficiency check can be undertaken.
For this reason, it is usually simpler and significantly less expensive to complete revalidation before the expiry date.

Combine SEP Revalidation with Hour Building
Many pilots arrive in Spain needing additional hours before satisfying their revalidation requirements.
Hour-Building.com allows pilots to combine:
-
SEP Revalidation
-
Hour Building
-
Pilot-in-Command (PIC) Time
-
Cross-Country Flying
-
Touring Flights Across Spain and France
-
International Flights
-
Aircraft Rental
Rather than completing a short local instructional flight, many pilots choose to use their revalidation as part of a wider flying experience.
By the end of their trip, they have not only completed their SEP requirements but also gained valuable operational experience that benefits their future flying.
